Would you want to breathe air that passes through this dirty thing?
Without proper maintenance, your evaporator coil could look like this one.

Dirty Evaporator Coil

What is an evaporator coil (also known as an Indoor Coil)?
An evaporator is located inside your home or office and is one of the major air conditioning components that cools the air as it is blown through your home or office.

In this picture, the coil is so dirty, that it is restricting the amount of air that can flow through it.  The dried chunks of dirt that you see flaking off are typical for a dirty coil and could contain animal dander, animal hair, human hair and skin flakes, dirt, molds, bacteria, viruses, pollen, smoke, and slimy algae.

Once the air has passed through the evaporator coil, it is distributed through your duct system into the air that you breathe. This is a very good example of why maintenance is so important.  In addition, regular filter changes and enhanced filtration products can prevent or eliminate "gunk" of this type from collecting on the evaporator coil.

What can you do about it?

Most commonly, evaporator coils are cleaned with special chemicals along with a biocide treatment to reduce future organic growth for those indoor coils that are severely impacted with dirt.
